Life: Giving Thanks

“As simple as it sounds, gratitude is actually a demanding, complex emotion that requires ‘self-reflection, the ability to admit that one is dependent upon the help of others, and the humility to realize one’s own limitations.’” — Robert Emmons, University of California – Davis, Wall Street Journal, 11/23/10.

Reading this made me want to voice my gratitude to (don’t laugh) the newly opened spin studio two blocks from my house, and its lovely, lively owner Emmy Rigali. (www.gocyglestudio.com) Thank you, Cherie, for leading me there. It’s good to find a new way to sweat.

Bikram is my old way to sweat, and I’m grateful for that, too, particularly the instructors at Om on the Range. (www.omontherange.net). And to Laurel who first brought me there nearly 10 years ago.

A special call out to Gina Saka, who leads “Monday Night Yoga” at Church of the Three Crosses. (www.churchofthethreecrosses.org) Gina is so clear in her directions and guidance I would follow her into any pose. Thanks, too, to John Hobbs, the church pastor, for his warmth and humor and for clearing the chairs so we can practice in the sanctuary.

To the friends I’ve made at “church” yoga, and the places they’ve led me. Thank you, Jaquie. Last weekend she and I were treated to a tour of murals and mosaics in three Chicago neighborhoods (also a Mexican meal, a fruit water and the best tres leche I’ve ever tried.) An unforgettable day: thank you, Peggy.

I am grateful for this elegant space. Thank you Lisa Hazen. (www.lisahazen.com) I am especially grateful to my early readers: you know who you are.

Happy Thanksgiving.

It feels fitting, then, to post on a memoir and two biographies. Each concerns the life of an American woman. For a work assignment, I
